Allergic or contact dermatitis with bindi?

TRADITION:

Bindi is a dot on the forehead between the brows that holds importance to Indians.  Women will wear this as “makeup” to a festival. Some may wear because of culture. It may cause allergic dermatitis or contact dermatitis. In simple language, it is an irritant skin disease or skin eruption. This happens with hypersensitive or susceptible individuals. For layman understanding, allergic dermatitis or contact dermatitis is skin rash or eruption.

SCIENCE:

The same bindi a symbol of tradition can become a source of skin problems. Very few can realize this. Let us understand how. New research shows that bindi can cause problems like contact dermatitis or allergic dermatitis. Contact dermatitis means a type of rash on the skin. in this case, it will be the forehead. it could be because of some allergen [substance causing allergy] or irritant [substance causing irritation or inflammation]. It is possible with individuals who are susceptible or hypersensitive.

CAUSE:

let us now understand why bindi may cause allergy in some individuals. bindi or kumkum is prepared with turmeric, starch, or chalk powder & some dyes, paraben & groundnut oil. any of these substances can cause allergy as mentioned above. The adhesive material used in stickler bindi also may cause allergies. bindi is not the only culprit. no cosmetics products can cause allergies or dermatitis like hair dye, soap & face creams. There are cases found of contact dermatitis in India due to hair dye & face creams reason being synthetic ingredients used largely.

REMEDIES:

it is difficult to imagine that a harmless item like bindi can cause so many skin problems. so next time when you apply bindi on the forehead think about all the problems it carries. here are some home remedies which could be helpful.

1.cold compress: apply ice, cold water, damp cloth on the affected area.it will ease itching & rash.

2.oatmeal [jaai ka daliya] fine grind oatmeal in the grinder. add one tablespoon in water. wash face       with this water.

3.aloe vera gel: we know this plant very well. wash your face properly & apply aloe vera gel.it will         soothe itching.

4.coconut oil: apply a small quantity of coconut oil on the itchy surface. leave it for some time. wash     face with warm water.

5.baking soda: Make a paste & apply to the affected area. it will reduce itching.

we respect our traditions & at the same time do not want to suffer. Maybe you can look for a bindi made from natural material.If something goes wrong you may apply the abovementioned remedies.
